Answers to the fishing questions anglers ask most.

Techniques & Bait

What's the difference between casting and bottom fishing?

Casting actively throws a lure to entice predators to strike. Bottom fishing places bait on the bottom and waits for fish to bite — ideal for carp, tilapia, and estuary snapper.

How do I mix effective carp bait?

Carp bait usually blends fine pellet, ant eggs, egg, and aromatic essence. Adjust the texture so it doesn't fall apart, and tune the aroma to the fish in that pond. See our Bait & Recipes section for full recipes.

What bait is best for beginners?

For beginners, natural bait like worms, moss, or ready-made pellet is the easiest and most effective for pond fish such as tilapia and pomfret.

Which knot is strongest for tying a hook?

The improved clinch and palomar knots are strong and easy to learn. To join leader to main line, the FG knot is highly recommended for being slim and strong.

How do I fish in murky water?

In murky water, use strongly scented bait so fish can detect it, or bright, vibrating lures. Fish closer to structure and slow your retrieve for better results.

Tackle

What's the difference between spinning and baitcasting reels?

Spinning reels are easier to use and suit beginners and lighter baits. Baitcasting reels offer more control and power for heavy lures and big fish, but take practice to avoid backlash.

How do I pick a rod for my target fish?

Match the rod's power and action to your target. Small fish need a light/ultralight rod, while large predators need medium-heavy. Also mind the lure and line ratings printed on the rod.

PE braid or monofilament — which is better?

PE (braided) line is thinner, stronger, and more sensitive — great for casting and jigging. Mono is stretchier and cheaper, good for bottom fishing and beginners. Many anglers combine both with a fluorocarbon leader.

How do I maintain my reel?

Rinse the reel with fresh water after saltwater use, dry it, and periodically oil the moving parts. Avoid over-disassembling it unless necessary.

What gear is essential for an angler?

Besides a rod and reel, prepare a tackle box with hooks, sinkers, swivels, and lures, plus a landing net, pliers, and sun protection. For sea fishing, a life vest is strongly advised.

Spots & Seasons

When is the best time to fish?

Generally early morning and toward dusk when fish actively feed. Tidal changes, overcast weather, and the days around a full moon often boost fish activity.

How do I find a good fishing spot?

Look for structure like reefs, fallen trees, estuaries, or depth changes where fish gather. Asking the local community and following our Spots & Locations section helps a lot.

How do tides affect sea fishing?

Moving water during incoming or outgoing tides makes fish more active hunters. Many anglers fish while the current moves, not during slack water, for better strike odds.

Does weather affect fishing results?

Very much. Air pressure, temperature, and sky conditions affect fish appetite. Overcast weather is often a favorite, while extreme weather changes can put fish off the bite.

How do I fish safely by the sea?

Watch the waves and tides, wear non-slip footwear, avoid slippery cliffs, and don't fish alone in remote spots. Always put safety above the catch.

Community & Conservation

What is catch and release and how do I do it?

Catch and release means returning fish after catching them. Wet your hands before handling, use barbless hooks, minimize time out of water, and release gently so the fish survives.

How do I join the Bursa Pemancing community?

Reach us via WhatsApp or social media. It's free to join — you can share spots, recipes, and join group trips with anglers across the archipelago.

Can I fish anywhere?

No. Some areas are conservation or protected zones. Always confirm a spot allows fishing, respect local rules, and ask permission when needed.

How do I keep a fishing spot clean?

Take all your trash home, especially old line that harms wildlife. Avoid dumping excess bait and protect the surrounding vegetation to keep the ecosystem healthy.

Why do minimum catch sizes matter?

Releasing undersized fish lets them grow and breed, keeping populations sustainable and spots productive for the future.
